Negative Coping Mechanisms
Often, people resort to negative coping mechanisms instead of positive coping mechanisms. Here are some of the more commonly used negative coping mechanisms. Most of the time these methods do very little to relieve stress but instead provide short term help while sacrificing long time well being.
Smoking
Smoking is one of the most commonly used responses to stress. It provides a very short term stress relief but in the long term creates more stress because of health,financial, trying to quit, and many more negative factors.
Too much Caffeine
Similar to smoking caffeine can solve your short term problems but can create more long term problems. These problems include but are not limited to ; dependence, caffeine crashes, lack of sleep and more.
Excessive consumption of alcohol.
A wine or beer may be relaxing at the time but they can also cause problems in every area of a persons if you drink too much. These problems will create much more stress in a persons life.
Emotional eating
Eating junk food almost always provides short term comfort and relief of stress. Though it does this if it becomes a habit for coping with stress it can lead to health problems such as excessive weight or diabetes. These create much more stress in the persons live.
Compulsive spending
Though everyone enjoys a gift for themselves if spending to relieve stress becomes a habit it can create financial stress which is one of the worst stresses.
